Heinrich A. Warkentin, minister, teacher, and farmer, was born on October 6, 1887 to Aron and Maria Warkentin, in the village of Gruenfeld, South Russia. As one of a large family he attended the village school and then studied at home until he was able to get a teaching position. He was baptized in 1907 by Aeltester Isaak Dyck and that same year married Sara Driedger on June 25th. Their marriage produced five children of which three survived. During WWI Warkentin worked for the medical corp in Moscow and in the Crimea. Following WWI and the revolution, tragedy struck when 16 members of Maria's family were murdered on the 5th of December 1919, including her parents and siblings. They were buried in Steinbach in a mass grave of 71 bodies. As a result Warkentin and his family decided to immigrate to Canada. They arrived in 1923 and spent their first year in Herbert, Saskatchewan. They moved to Hochfeld for two years and then finally to Ste. Elizabeth where he farmed for ten years. Warkentin was elected to the ministry by the Blumenorter Congregation in Reinland. He was ordained in 1926 by Aeltester David Toews. In 1944 Warkentin moved to Grunthal where he served as lead pastor of the Elim Mennonite Church for nine years. Heinrich A. Warkentin died on November 23, 1959.
This fonds contains 17 sermons one of which was written for the wedding of H. and A. Klassen. Some of the passages these sermons are based on include: I kings 17:2-16, Judges 6:24, Psalm 23, 1 John 4:19 and Matthew 16:24.
